Using the Links
Nemaline Rod Myopathy occurs in both humans and other animals. I provide links to human-related NRM sites to increase our understanding of the mechanics of the disease, but I would caution against assuming that the disease and its treatments would be parallel in all cases.
This blog is for people who are concerned about a cat suffering from Nemaline Rod Myopathy.
Nemaline Rod Myopathy is a serious, progressive disease. It can shorten your cat's life, but it may not. You have the choice of whether to build your cat's strength and resistance to the ill effects of NM with exercise, diet, and supplements. None of these will effect a cure, but they may help to prolong his or her life.
Even if you are unable to provide these extras, your cat may live a long and happy life. If you do provide them, you may find a strengthening of the bond of affection that normally grows between companions. Far from being a burden, Fluffy is a pleasure to live with, whose calm, laid back (laid way back!) approach to life has taught me a lot about destressing and hanging out.
NM is not a painful disease. If, like I was in the early years, you are feeling afraid and upset, I want to reassure you. You don't need to spend every day fearing for your pal's life. Instead, enjoy today. There may be many, many more days of camaraderie ahead.
